Day 24: Alma, CO

4109 miles

From Ridgeway I drove to Alma, Colorado. I ate dinner at one of two restaurants in town, and the only one that was open. I ordered a burger and a water (I needed to hydrate for the hike tomorrow) and I don't think that combination had ever been ordered at the restaurant before. From there I drove to the San Isabel National Forest . I camped at the Kite Lake trail head. I slept in my car at the turnaround and will hike Mt. Democrat in the morning and then drive to Denver and/or Boulder.

Day 22-23: Ridgeway, CO

3800 milesI drove to Ridgeway, Colorado where Octavia lives. She had an extra ticket to the Saturday show at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival so we went. I drove. After 10 minutes of driving I got pulled over. I got a ticket. I was pissed. I continued driving . 30 minutes later I was pulled over again. I got a warning. We arrived in Telluride! The shows were great and a very pretty venue. Yonder Mountain String Band, Bela Fleck, and Sam Bush were notable performers. Octavia drove back from Telluride. When we got back to Ridgeway, two more friends, Synthia and Katrina were already there waiting on us. The four of us hung out.The next morning we went in to town and got big breakfasts. Then we went back to Octavia's and shot her bow n' arrow and slingshot. The four of us then went to Telluride for the last day of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Nobody got any tickets. Carolina Chocolate Drops, Brandi Carlile, and Mumford & Sons were my favorites, especially Mumford. We rode the gondola back to where we parked the cars with Brandi Carlile. Synthia was really nervous and I'm pretty sure I embarrassed her. When we got to the cars, Synthia and Katrina had to drive back to Philmont.

Day 21: Coaldale, CO

3620 miles
I woke up and Parkinson's wife made me a big omelet for breakfast before I headed west. I skipped all of the excitement and drove across Kansas to Colorado. I went to the REI in Colorado Springs and stocked up on some things including a first aid kit which I had sold in Philadelphia. I drove halfway to Ridgeway, Colorado and camped at a campground on the Arkansas River.

Day 20: Kansas City

2946 miles
I woke up early and drove to Kansas City. I met two old Philmont friends Denzel and Parkinson for lunch. After lunch I hung out at Denzel's pool and took a steam bath. This road trip life is tough. Then Denzel and I went to a Royals' game. After that I went to Parkinson's house and went to sleep.

Day 19: Wright City, MO

2734 miles
I left Chicago in the morning and drove south. I crossed the Mississippi River and went in to Missouri. I watched a St. Louis Cardinals' game. I didn't have anywhere to stay so I drove to the first rest stop on I-70 and slept in the back of my car.

Day 14-18: Chicago

2364 miles
I left Toledo and drove to Chicago. I had time to kill before I picked up my girlfriend at the airport so I decided to take the scenic route so I could spend the 3 extra hours sitting in traffic. Kelley arrived and we went to her aunt and uncle's condo in Barrington.
The first day we walked around the city all day. We went to the Sears Tower where you are not allowed to take pictures of anything except one wall of flags. We saw lots of skyscrapers, but we did NOT take the boat tour. We walked around the Loop and then we went SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!! Kiley didn't buy anything. After dinner we met Karley's cousin for a couple of drinks at her apartment which was neat. The next day we went to Millenium Park. It is very pretty. We saw a giant reflective sculpture called the Bean. We went to the Pritzker Pavilion by The Frank O. Gehry. After that we went to Wrigley Field where the Cubs were playing the White Sox. The White Sox threw a no-hitter until the 7th inning. The Cubs threw a no-hitter until the 9th. Cubs won 1-0.The next day we went to Oak Park to see some Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. We saw Unity Temple, and walked outside several homes, including his own. We then went to Hyde Park and saw the Robie House.
The last day we went back to Millenium Park and took some pictures. I took Karley to the airport and she left and I was super happy to get rid of her boring ass.

Day 13: Toledo, OH

2068 miles
I met Damien's girlfriend Karla. We ate lunch. We went to the Lake Eerie beach. I left and drove to my cousin Patrick's house in Monclova Ohio. I helped him and my Uncle Daryl renovate the basement. I pretty much did the whole thing by myself while they got drunk. We ate dinner with Patrick's wife Jacqueline, their children Sammy and Carla, and my other aunt and uncle Madeline and Bart. The next morning I played a little basketball with Sammy. We got in a debate over who was a better basketball player, David Thompson or Tyler Hansbrough. Sammy is an idiot. Later, I went with Patrick to his office/lab at the University of Toledo. He wanted to break my leg so that he could analyze it with all of his fancy equipment but there wasn't enough time so I left.

Day 11-12: Wooster, OH

1810 miles
I left Philadelphia. I drove through Pennsylvania. There were alot of anti-abortion billboards. I drove to Mill Run, Pennsylvania and saw Fallingwater. It is a famous house by Frank Lloyd Wright. I met Rusty "Nailz" Miller. We toured the house and took pictures.I kept driving to Wooster Ohio where stayed with Damien Caine. We went to Amish country. We ate pie. We went to Akron Ohio and saw a minor league baseball game. The Aero's lost. We went to a bar and sang karaoke. Damien was The Boss and Natasha and I were the E Street Band and we sang Thunder Road. It was the most beautiful thing you have ever heard. I drove home. I got pulled over for going 15 over the speed limit at 2:30 am. I got a warning.

Day 10: Philadelphia

1280 miles

I ate breakfast with JR and left NYC. I drove to Philadelphia. I tried to buy a train ticket. I ran out of money. I drove to REI and bartered an old first aid kit for cash. I bought a train ticket. I went to a Phillies game with Lee and Marlene. It was fun. The Phillies lost. I stayed with Lee and Marlene and they were super nice.

Days 7-9: New York

1180 miles

I left Boston and first went north to Exeter NH. I saw a library by Louis Kahn. It was rad.

I stayed with JR and Samantha and Clemency / Kiki and Oscar. Their house in Brooklyn was sweet. We played video games. Then I went into the city. (the city is what people who are really hip and not country bumpkins call 'Manhattan'). I went to the Guggenheim Museum. It was this dumb building nobody had ever hear of until MEN IN BLACK and The Will Smith chases a cephalopoid to the top only to have him jump off and kill himself. I hung out with Ryan W. I went out with Kiki and O-Dawg and we played Big Buck Hunter and drank alcohol.

I went back into the city and ate lunch on a boat in the Hudson River. I went to the High Line. I went to the Folk Art Museum and the Austrian Cultural Forum. JR and Samantha made us all dinner and we played cards. I won. No big deal. We played more video games. Pix...flickr...

Days 4-6: Boston

I drove through states....

I stayed with Max....

He lives in a big house in Brookline MA with 7 other people from his program (which i think is titled Episcopalian Real World: Boston). I walked around Cambridge. I went to Harvard. I went to MIT. I think i will put that on my resume.

Mac and I ate dinner at a monastery. Nobody said a word the whole meal. We went to a Red Sox game the next day. They lost.

Here are some pix. Again, check out flickr...

Day 2-3: Washington DC

I will never catch up unless I do a real short posts so here goes...

I walked around DC in the day. I saw historic stuff like monuments and memorials. I saw museums. Some had architectural models, others had dinosaur bones. I saw a parade. I did not see the president. I put up shelves in my cousin's house and let her children 'wash' me for like 6 hours at the dinner table. Here are some pix. There are many more on flickr...

Day 1: Raleigh, NC to Millersville, MD

314 miles

I left today. Bruce and I sang 'Born to Run' as I got on Capital Boulevard headed north. (personally I think I sound better than he does but he wrote it so whatever). There was good weather for driving, partly cloudy with no rain. The only stop I made was to snap a pic of my first state-line-crossing.
Yes, that is a tractor trailer on my American flag (which I got at a flea market in the Czech Republic.)
I arrived in Millersville MD (45 minutes northeast of DC) at around 9:00pm. I think the whole house was already asleep but they were nice enough to not make me feel too bad about it. I am staying with Lina (my cousin) and her husband Daniel and their three children Joey, Timmy, and Kristy. My aunt Kathryn and her boyfriend Tim are also staying for the weekend to help out around the house.
DC tomorrow!

Blog Disclaimer

I am going to try and keep this blog short and sweet. My flickr account will be updated hopefully more often than this blog. I also will try to keep my Progress Map (links to the right) up to date with where I am and how I got there. As much as I enjoy writing witty things on the internet, it is time consuming and the road is long...
